When it comes to dryer vent cleaning, we’ve seen it all in our Raleigh business and we know what works best when it comes to exterior dryer wall vent covers. More importantly, your choice of exterior wall vent covers can go a long way to enhancing home safety and energy savings.
There are a few different styles of dryer wall vents that are typically used. Each one of the vents we’ll review have different features to allow the lint to roll out of the vent but at the same time protect your vent from intrusion by nature’s elements, birds and other rodents.
Birdcage Dryer Vent Covers
The first one I want to talk about is your standard 4 inch dryer vent hood with a flapper and birdcage. To the average homeowner this seems like the ultimate fix to keep birds and squirrels from getting in the vent and building nests. This product though is the worst vent cover you can ever install. Here’s why: the cage acts as a lint trap. The cage doesn’t allow the lint to come out the vent and it constantly gets clogged up. That means the property owner is going to have to go empty the cage on a regular basis and hope the dryer vent doesn’t catch on fire if they forget. It also means the dryer has to work harder increasing your energy costs. In truth many cities and states they have made this style of dryer wall vent against building code. With that said NEVER install a cage like the one pictured around your dryer vent. The pictures below are from one of our recent jobs. I see this so many times a year it is unbelievable.
Louvered Vent Covers
The next dryer wall vent I want to discuss is a louvered vent. Typically they are a standard 4 inch vent with 3 or 4 louvers. These are good vent covers because by having the multiple louvers like that the birds and other rodents cant fit in between the louvers. This style also allows the lint to leave the vent with out getting trapped. This style dryer wall vent typically comes in multiple colors and is a plastic material. They work like there supposed to but after awhile the plastic will start to become brittle and the louvers warp and then you have to replace it.
The Dryer Wall Vent
This vent is made out of 22 gauge galvanized steel and powder coated. The vent has a magnetic door that stays closed when the dryer is not running. This feature makes it so the birds and rodents don’t get in the vent. The magnets and 30 gauge door are also designed to open when the dryer gets started. It’s a heavy duty dryer vent hood that accents the homes exterior and provides the ultimate protection. The little more money spent on this vent cover will pay off today and in the future.
I hope that helps you understand the importance of selecting the proper dryer vent cover for your home or business.
